The Manual Site Creation tool allows you to quickly create new sites with channels, without the need for you to submit any forms or requests to FlowWorks Support. You simply provide the site’s details, and add channels as needed. You can set an automatic deactivation date if the site is seasonal or temporary. Sites are instantly made available in FlowWorks, ready to receive data. Sites that you create using Sigma File Creation and Manual Site Creation will be billed to the client as per their regular billing cycle. Please contact FlowWorks Support if you have any questions.
1. Open Manual Site Creation
- Click Manage, found in the main toolbar.
A dropdown menu appears. - Click Create Sites.
2. Complete all fields under Site Information Settings
- (Optional) Choose client.
This menu will only be visible if your user profile is attached to multiple clients. A client is an organization subscribed to FlowWorks’ services.
The client you choose will be billed for the new site as per their regular billing cycle.
- Type a Display Site Name.
This name is used in many list and tools in FlowWorks. It helps to make the site easy to recognize and find. - Type an Internal Site Name.
This is the site identification that accompanies data as it arrives in FlowWorks. It is often tied to the source logger. The internal site name must match the name provided by the source logger, so that FlowWorks can identify incoming data and organize it accordingly.
The internal site name is case-sensitive. Data is rejected when it arrives with a name that does not match an internal site name in FlowWorks. Please ensure the internal site name you enter matches exactly the name provided by the source logger.
- Choose a Site Type.
Each site type is represented by a unique icon. This helps you to visually identify the site in many areas of FlowWorks, such as Map View and Graphing. For more information, see About Site Type. - Specify the Collection Method.
The collection method describes how data is collected at the site. This is used for usability enhancements in FlowWorks; for example, you can filter visibility of sites in Map View based on collection method. Choose the option that best suits the circumstance.
Manual: data is manually uploaded with the Data Upload Tool.
FTP: An FTP client is used for relaying files. If you do not already have an FTP account configured with FlowWorks, find out how you can work with Support to get setup. See Upload Data to FlowWorks Via FTP.
Specific Web Service: If you have a specific web-services enabled, select it from the list. - (Optional) Set an Automatic Deactivation Date.
The site deactivation date must be within one month from the date of setup. Upon deactivation, billing will terminate and the site will stop receiving data. You can still view and use deactivated sites in FlowWorks’ tools.
If this field is left blank, site fees will be perpetually charged to the client as per their regular billing cycle.
3. (Optional) Complete fields under Optional Settings
Include location and data information. Completing all fields in this section is not compulsory for site setup they simply serve to enhance their usability in FlowWorks.
- Enter Latitude and Longitude coordinates.
You can provide GPS coordinates to mark the exact location of a site in Map View.
FlowWorks’ map uses the WGS 1984 Web Mercator (Auxiliary Sphere) coordinate system and coordinates are expressed in the form of decimal degrees. You can use this latitude and longitude map to quickly find the coordinates of your site. Simply click anywhere on the map to drop a pin. Click the pin to view coordinates, and copy them into these two type fields.
Ensure the minus symbol is used where needed.
- Enter a Time Zone within which your new site resides, offset from GMT.
Click here to view a time zone map.
Ensure the minus symbol is used where needed.
- Enter a Street Address.
You may wish to include an address if you use FlowWorks to establish Work Orders. This can help you provide clearer directions for maintenance crews who must physically visit the site. - Input a time (in minutes) for Expected Schedule.
This field refers to the number of expected minutes between data collections. For example, entering “1440” minutes indicates that FlowWorks is to expect new data from this site every 24-hours. If data is not received within the specified time, it will be labelled “late”. The icon used to represent your site in lists and Map View will be colored to indicate data is/ has arrived late.
If this site is to use a manual collection method, enter “0”.
- Select the Default Units for this site. You can choose between US Standard and Metric.
This establishes a unit standard that is used throughout FlowWorks when you are working with this site.
4. Click Next
The second page opens, where you can proceed to configure data channels.
5. (Optional) Configure Channels
This part of site setup allows you to create new raw and calculated channels.
If you are ready to make data channels for this new site, ensure every channel name is typed exactly as it appears in your data file; or, if you don’t yet have a data file ready, you can later use the Data Upload tool to add enclosed data to your new channel(s). Simply make channel placeholders here, and prior to uploading ensure each channel name provided in the data file matches the names you use in FlowWorks (case sensitive).
- Click Add New. This reveals a single row of fields.
- Enter a Channel Name.
(For raw channels only) Ensure each channel name is typed exactly as it appears in your data file. If you do not yet have a data file, create channel names and ensure the channel names in the data file are accurate before it is uploaded to FlowWorks.
- Choose the channel’s units of measure. Use the drop-down list to make your selection.
- Specify whether this channel is to contain raw or calculated data.
Calculated channels will require setup of either a formula or function, using FlowWorks’ Advanced Calculation Engine (F.A.C.E.).
- Repeat steps 1-4 for each additional channel you want to include.
6. Choose a data source for raw channels
None: You are not currently adding raw channels, and will do so later.
FTP: When selected, a drop-down list of available FTP imports will appear. Choose the FTP user and format that match your specifications. Your chosen FTP data source will be applied to each raw channel you create.
You can choose only one FTP source.
FSDATA: FlowWorks can connect to FSData (Hach’s cloud service) and automatically pull data in. When this option is selected, you must complete all additional fields to successfully establish a link to FSData for this site. Please consult your FSData administrator if you require assistance in completing this form.
Collection Schedule: the frequency of which FlowWorks will request (or pull) new data from FS Data.
7. Click Create Site and view the results
From the results page, you have the follow options:
Upload Data: If you wish to manually add a data file to the new site, refer to the following section for details.
Configure this Site: If you want to edit the site or any of its channels.
Create Another Site: The Manual Site Creation tool will restart.
Next Steps
If you created a calculated channel, you will need to configure it to apply either a F.A.C.E. formula or function to incoming data. See articles, Configure a Calculated Channel with a Formula (General Steps) and Configure a Calculated Channel with a Function (General Steps).
You may want to add additional raw or calculated channels to the site you just created. See, Add a Raw or Calculated Data Channel to an Existing Site.
